Frankfurt may be Germany’s finance and business capital, but Ameron Frankfurt Neckarvillen Boutique gives the city some soul. The series of transformed townhouses now contains an outpost of everybody’s favourite restaurant in Berlin, which is also the only place in town that serves Kobe beef. The indulgence doesn’t stop there: it’s an oysters and caviar kind of affair, with original artworks by Yves Saint Laurant and Roy Lichtenstein gracing the walls, and hundreds of wines to choose from. The sauna can accommodate four guests at a time, so it’s best to book a slot in advance – it’s officially open daily from 5pm until 11pm, but if you want to use it out of hours, just ask reception nicely. Facials and massages at Sokai Private Medical Lounge can be arranged on request.

Hotel restaurant
If you’re in Frankfurt and fancy some Kobe beef, you’ve come to the right place: the hotel’s Le Petit Royal outpost is the only restaurant in town that serves it and one of only seven places in Germany where you can eat Japan’s most esteemed marbled meat. The menu also features indulgent classics seen in self-respecting brasseries all over the world, from roasted red prawns served by the kilo, oysters, caviar and platters of fruits de mer to every cut of beef. The wine list stars 380 wines and 20 champagnes, some of which are helpfully on display in a glass cabinet. Buffet breakfasts are served here each morning, with a few à la carte options, too.
Hotel bar
The decadent, dimly lit bar is exactly where you need to head for expertly mixed cocktails with only slightly terrifying names like How to Kill a Horse. In case you’re squinting trying to figure it out, the neon chandelier spells out ‘All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy’ – with the lights turned down for the ‘L’ of ‘play’, in a nod to the financial and legal suits in the after-work crowd. DJs are on hand to keep things even livelier than the cocktails every Friday and Saturday.

The hotel is in the Bahnofsviertel quarter – named after the city’s major train station, which is conveniently close – and just off Kaiserstrasse, Frankfurt’s main thoroughfare, with all of the restaurants, bars and boutiques you’d expect.
Planes
The city’s international airport is easily reached – both drive time and metro journeys only take about 20 minutes. The hotel can arrange transfers, starting from €50.
Trains
Frankfurt am Main station is a five-minute walk away and the nearest metro station, the mildly obscenely named Willy Brandt Platz, is a similar distance.
Automobiles
The hotel is on a mostly pedestrianised street, but you’ll be able to stow your car away at various car parks within a few minutes’ walk, including the garage at the theatre. You can drive up to the entrance to drop your bags first.
Worth getting out of bed for
The city-centre setting means you’ll be close to all of Frankfurt’s shops and sights, which include Goethe’s house, the mediaeval Römer building, Schirn contemporary art museum and the rest of the cultural establishments lined up along the embankment, Museumsufer. The happening Hauptwache plaza and boutique-lined Zeil are also within easy reach. Cross the Old Bridge over the river to Portikus to see its showcase of exciting emerging and established artists, or catch a play at the English Theatre. Cider lovers should call in at Apfelwienhandlung, even if they can’t pronounce it – this cider shop is in a former pharmacy and stocks alcoholic apple juice in all its forms. Find a spot in the West End’s peaceful botanical garden afterwards to sleep all that cider off.
Local restaurants
The city’s finest sushi (and a terrace to enjoy it on) awaits at Moriki. You have to ring the bell to be admitted, but once you’re in, Weinsinn swaps clandestine speakeasy for high ceilings and Michelin-starred meals. As you can possibly gather from the name, the city’s best fish soup (and other assorted seafood snacks) are served in a low-key setting at Alim’s Fisch Imbiss.
Local cafés
Plank may not know whether it’s a café, bar or art studio – but it’s a rather nice place to watch the sunset along Müchener Strasse.
Local bars
For wines by the glass, creative cocktails and handy small plates to soak it all up, head to Yaldy, a five-minute walk away from the hotel. If you’re granted entry to The Kinly Bar in Bahnofsviertel, you’ll be able to enjoy its award-winning mixology. The guestlist is restricted at Embury Bar for different reasons (it’s tiny), but it’s also worth trying to squeeze in for its cocktails and whisky selection.

With the designer of Italy’s homely JK Place group in charge of the interiors, you know you’re in for a cosy stay – and Luigi Fragola has ensured this boutique hotel in Frankfurt is just as inviting as its distant Italian cousins. If you love marble, you’ll enjoy the lobby, which has three kinds (all Italian, of course). Each room has a tablet so you can chat to reception, make free local calls to your new German friends and read newspapers in 30 languages. The building is equally attractive on the outside. It’s formed from four villas: one of which was a retail trading house; another a private banking company – seamlessly spanning styles from art nouveau to neo-renaissance in one sweep. Inevitably with such a blueprint, the interiors are on the labyrinthine side, but you’ll be able to use your senses to guide you to Leonardo DiCaprio’s favourite Berlin restaurant, now helpfully transplanted to Frankfurt, the buzzy bar (and its amazing cocktails) and the sauna. In a city of soulless corporate hotels catering to the business crowd, and with plenty of high-rise architecture nearby, it’s a welcome trip back in time.
